10 fun facts about Gilmore Girls

I

‘ve never really considered myself a huge Gilmore Girls fan, but when Netflix announced a reboot of the show, I started watching the whole series all over again and discovered I had actually seen about 90% of the episodes before.

While I was often annoyed, mostly by Rory’s actions, I got so addicted! Plus the show is such a big deal for women on TV, something I didn’t fully grasp watching it growing up, but I certainly do now. And now that I’ve seen all seven seasons, I’m having some withdrawal symptoms. No better way to fight them than write a nerdy post, right?

10 fun facts about Jane The Virgin

So, I have to be honest about it. I think the title of this show was holding me back for the longest time to start watching it. And when I heard what the show was about, a 23 year old virgin being accidentally inseminated during a visit to her doctor, I thought “no way!”.  But when my friend Nathalie told me one weekend that she was binge watching the show my interest was sparked. And so, when I saw Jane The Virgin appear on Netflix, I gave the woman a chance and oh was I happy that I did! The funny dialogues and the telenovela drama has been exactly what I’ve been missing ever since Ugly Betty went off the air. (Which reminds me, I really like Eva Longoria’s new show Telenovela as well, do check it out!) Since I started watching, I’ve converted many a friend to team Jane myself, and because Jane The Virgin seemed like a show that has a lot of fun facts, I couldn’t wait to start digging! So here they are:

Get the look: Romeo + Juliet // Interior inspiration from Baz Luhrmann's 1996 masterpiece

A

while back I wrote this post reuniting my love for movies and interior, and it certainly had me craving for more.  There’s something really satisfying about analyzing the design of a movie and translating it to 2015. To me, at least, I guess I’m just nerdy like that. Because it can’t be all Wes Anderson all the time (can it?), I thought I’d focus on one of my other favorite directors of all time: Baz Luhrmann. And the movie that made me fall in love with his work and Leonardo DiCaprio as a pre-teen: Romeo + Juliet.

10 Iconic looks from 7 seasons of Mad Men

Mad Men came to an end last night after 7 seasons of beautiful and elaborate (visual) storytelling. There are many memorable moments in the series’ 8 year long stretch on the small screen, ranging from lawnmower accidents to LSD trips, but I thought I’d pay homage to the series my way, dissecting some of the sartorial clues Costume designer Janie Bryant and Make up artist Lana Horochowski have left for viewers. While some bloggers go as far as to claim the characters are clad in green or blue before they cheat, Bryant says: “My job is to tell the stories of these characters through these clothes. There is definitely symbolism there, but sometimes it’s a bit more overt.”

Here are 10 outfits and style elements that helped tell this tale of midcentury drama: 10 iconic looks from 7 seasons of Mad Men.

1. Betty Draper’s nightie – S1E9 “Shoot”

10 Iconic looks from 7 seasons of Mad Men

For most of the first season, Betty Draper is a picture perfect Barbie doll, dressed up in flawless getups that were heavily influenced by Grace Kelly.

However, when Betty looses out on a Coca Cola commercial, she works out her anger and frustration by blasting the pigeons of her neighbor, Mr Beresford, out of the sky with a rifle. She does so in a semi-transparent nightgown, cigarette hanging from her lips, dead look in her eyes.

The scene happens just after a moment of seemingly domestic bliss, as Betty sends Don of to work, does a load of laundry and can’t help but smile at her children jumping off the bed upstairs. “My Special Angel” by Bobby Helms plays in the background, and TV magic was made.

I

love how everything and anything can spark inspiration for your interior. For me, being a pop culture addict, inspiration often strikes when I’m watching movies and TV. Even when I was barely a teenager, I painted my room lavender to resemble Monica’s living room in Friends, which instantly caused my dad to worry that I might have been a little too caught up in the show. Going by my binge viewing patterns till this day, maybe he was right to do so.

My lavender walls (and matching blue starfish stamped details) won’t be making a comeback anytime soon, but so many other movies have influenced me in developing my style. Take The Darjeeling Limited for example, the first (but definitely not the last) Wes Anderson movie I ever saw. It inspired me to hop on a plane to India back in 2009, and that experience most definitely had some serious impact in its turn. The colors and scents of India are anything but bland.

Wes Anderson movies are always a visually pleasing experience, and The Darjeeling Limited is no exception. With its golden hues and colorful accents, the movie makes for a perfect source of inspiration. A great reason for some eye candy straight from this movie masterpiece and some tips on how to recreate the movie’s atmosphere right in your home.

Girls Style Guide

Like many young women my age, I’ve been a fan of the popular HBO show Girls ever since it first aired back in 2012. Though I feel that in many ways the show exaggerates (but doesn’t every show with humor?), a lot of the scenario’s are oh so recognizable for us Gen Y-ers.

Girls Style Guide

Tonight, the fourth season of the show starts in the US, and as a tribute to Lena Dunham’s masterpiece, I thought it would be nice to put together a style guide on how to dress like the four ‘Girls’. So here it is! Everything you need to know to dress like Hannah, Jessa, Marnie and Shoshanna!

Girls Style Guide // 5 tips for dressing like Hannah Horvath

How to dress like Hannah:

Hannah may be the voice of her generation in many ways, but it’s safe to say she’ll never win any prizes in the fashion department. Much like her personality, Hannah’s everyday style is pretty chaotic and unkempt. Her clothes are rarely ironed and nine times out of ten pretty mismatched.

Girls Style Guide // 5 tips for dressing like Hannah Horvath

1. Don’t be afraid to wear something unexpected. Hanah’s look is many things, but never boring. Mix colours and prints. don’t really pay attention if they match or not.

2. Ugly is the new hip. Hannah really loves wearing questionable items, so the next time your grandmother tosses out a fluffy christmas sweater from 1982, claim it.

3. All Hannah’s outfits have a youthful, sometimes even childlike allure. Flat brogues, leather schoolbags and short shorts often give her look a cute vibe.

4. Hannah’s style is often vintage-inspired.

5. Wear whatever you want. Be unapologetic. If somebody thinks you can’t pull something off, it’s their problem.

Girls Style Guide // 5 tips for dressing like Jessa Johansson

How to dress like Jessa:

Jessa is my personal favorite on the show when it comes to style. Her style is eclectic and unique, and it feels as if she can get away with just about anything.

Girls Style Guide // 5 tips for dressing like Jessa Johansson

1. Jessa’s eclectic look can also be described as bohemian and draws a lot of inspiration from the seventies. Big jewelry, kaftans, hats,… Jessa pulls it all off and acts like it’s no big deal

2. Jessa looks amazing every time she wears (red) lipstick. It makes her extravagant outfits feel pulled together.

Girls Style Guide // 5 tips for dressing like Jessa Johansson3. Wear your (long) hair loose and messy or in top knots & braided updos.

4. Unique pieces are a must. Find vintage treasures and handmade items to make your look more personal.

5. I think 50% of the succes of Jessa’s style lies in her confidence. Maybe even a little in her arrogance.

Girls Style Guide // 5 tips for dressing like Marnie Michaels

How to dress like Marnie:

Marnie is most definitely the put-together one. In the beginning of Girls, Marnie’s style was a bit stiff, but as the series matured, Marnie’s style has become a bit more relaxed.

Girls Style Guide // 5 tips for dressing like Marnie Michaels

1. Marnie always dresses like a lady. Ladylike silhouettes are key in her wardrobe. Your best friends for this look? Pencil skirts,  fitted dresses, classic jewelry &  high heels

2. Dress for the job you want (not the one you have). Marnie’s style is nothing but professional.

3. Go for classics. Marnie wears mostly timeless items with a modern and sleek look.

4. Less is more. Splurge on a few quality pieces and wear them often. It’s all about great fit.Girls Style Guide // 5 tips for dressing like Marnie Michaels5. Take care of the details. Marnie always looks polished and she takes care of her whole look. Perfect nails, flawless make up, tasteful accessories,…

Girls Style Guide // 5 tips for dressing like Shoshanna Shapiro

How to dress like Shoshanna:

For a girl who expected her life in NY to be exactly like Sex and the City, Shoshanna’s wardrobe mostly resembles something the cast of Gossip Girl would wear.

Girls Style Guide // 5 tips for dressing like Shoshanna Shapiro

1. Her style is girly, Shoshanna mostly wears skirts and dresses.

4. Shoshanna’s outfits are almost always colorful. She wears a lot of pink, purple and pastels.

10 fun facts about Suits

Suits. Swanky characters, smart lines, sharp dressing, pop culture references, the right amount of tension. I was hooked from day one and couldn’t get enough. For those of you who need a little background info: The show is set at Pearson Hardman, a fictional law firm in New York. Mike, a young and smart underachiever, was kicked out of college for selling the answers to a test and now makes a living as a bicycle messenger. His friend Trevor convinces him to take part in a drug deal. When this all blows up in his face, Mike stumbles into a job interview with Harvey, a lawyer at Pearson Hardman. As a new senior partner, Harvey has to hire a Harvard-educated lawyer as his associate. During the interview, Mike proves to Harvey he is the best candidate and is subsequently hired, despite the fact that he does not have a college degree, let alone one from Harvard.

It still feels like a brand new show to me, but in the US, season four ended this summer. Luckily for the fans, Suits has been renewed for a fifth season! Until then, here are some facts about the show…

10 Fun Facts about Mistresses

By 2 0

I can only really enjoy television drama when there’s a little humorous sauce poured over it. That’s why I like Orange is the New Black and Hart of Dixie. It’s also the reason why I used to be a big fan of Desperate Housewives. I must admit I was more than a little sad to see that show end, and for the longest time I felt there wasn’t a proper replacement for it.

Enter fellow ABC show Mistresses, albeit less suburban and more glamorous, but it’s the closest any show has come to fill the hole Desperate Housewives has left in my heart (dramatic, moi?). It’s witty and current, and dives into the lives of four women to look at their relationships from all different perspectives. It also vaguely reminds me of Lipstick jungle and Cashmere Mafia, two shows that got cancelled before they even properly started, but I have high hopes for this one. Is it the best show in the history of television? No. Is it highly addictive and entertaining? You bet!

In the US, Mistresses just finished their second season, but in Belgium Vijf just started showing the first season on tuesdays at 22:25. Missed it? Watch it here.

10 fun facts about Orange is the new Black

By 9 2

In just two seasons Orange is the New Black has become a true classic. The show has done a great job portraying life in women’s prison as written down by Piper Kerman in her bestselling 2010 memoir of the same name describing a year as an inmate. The in-depth portrayals of the prisoners in their current micro world are backed up by their stories,  and alternated with scenes from the outside world where life goes on as usual make this show a mix with a brilliant comi-tragic feel. Did I mention the ton of witty references? Oh the witty references!

I love that the stories are expertly sketched to make a detailed world. The show’s creators obsess over the seemingly irrelevant little details. They take the time to outline everything. And it works. These are some fun facts on the show which made me love it even more.
